Creating Issues from sticky notes.

The design.

This project was focused on transformation, enabling the conversion of a basic sticky note into a comprehensive Jira ticket. I embarked on a journey to prioritize customer requirements and understand the essential components of a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) that still had an enriched user experience. This project was one of the core display elements at Confluence Whiteboard’s entry into the market via Atlassian’s ‘TEAM’ conference

Adapting the UI to fit in with users existing custom fields

The primary challenge of this project revolved around the transformation of a complex, existing process—creating a Jira issue—into a streamlined and concise design. Our approach was meticulous, accounting for a myriad of edge cases, including scenarios where users lacked access to projects, lacked Jira, encountered custom fields, inputted incorrect information, or faced system restrictions necessitating navigation to Jira.

We extended this experience to encompass the capability to convert bulk sticky notes into Jira issues. The models and solutions devised during this project have established a noteworthy standard within Atlassian Whiteboards and have been adapted for use across a spectrum of complex features, such as smart sections.

Ability to change the display of the Jira issue

The process.

  • To ensure the delivery of high-quality work, we started with an initial competitor analysis, allowing us to identify established UX patterns that can align with our users' mental models. In addition, we reach out to relevant teams across Atlassian, initiating an early collaborative brainstorming session, or 'Jam.' This ensures that individuals with the expertise and experience important to the design space provide valuable insights into our creative process.

  • We did explore the initial designs delving into various aspects including edge cases, error scenarios, the precise fields to be displayed, handling of custom fields, and the presentation of links. This then underwent a thorough review process involving the triad, content designers, relevant teams, and engineers. This comprehensive evaluation ensures that the design not only aligns with our vision but also is both feasible and desirable, ultimately resulting in a viable solution.

  • I collaborated closely with our engineering team to address and resolve all edge cases, conducting testing of the final product to guarantee the highest quality before releasing it to customers. Additionally, I undertook the creation of marketing materials, not only for our Atlassian website but also for the Atlassian TEAM event in Las Vegas.

The impact.

I lead the development of a pivotal feature for Atlassian Whiteoards that played a crucial role in attracting new customers and showing the quality of Atlassian Whiteboards, ultimately serving as the centrepiece of our CEO's keynote presentation at the Atlassian conference, 'TEAM.'
